Call for Nominations - Two Seats on the Executive Committee, Stop TB Partnership for Europe

28/08/07

Despite being curable, TB continues to kill nearly 2 million people a year. Globally TB-HIV and Multi-Drug Resistant Tuberculosis (MDR) are two of the most serious challenges confronting TB control efforts. These two issue areas also serve to highlight some of the biggest shortcomings of current TB prevention, diagnostic, and treatment tools in general. The lack of TB patient participation, community advocacy and political will that is needed to push for them are the root causes of unacceptably high death rates for persons living with MDR and TB-HIV. The challenges of low rates of TB detection and treatment completion are also issues that riddle TB programs in general.

One of the most important bodies to develop a multi-sectoral coordinated effort for TB control in the European and Central Asian region is a coalition of various public and private sector stakeholders called the Stop TB Partnership for Europe (The Partnership). The Partnership is made up of more than 30 organizations including research institutions, foundations, National TB Programs, product developers, and community activists. It is an independent organization, and has its secretariat based at the International Federation of the Red Cross, Geneva. Through this important Partnership, patient and community activists can influence policy formulation, its implementation, and evaluation for global TB control. This is a call for nominations to fill existing vacancies for two community advocate seats on the Stop TB Partnership for Europe Executive Committee.

The Executive Committee of the Partnership has worked on enhancing community involvement in TB advocacy and has created two community seats on the Stop TB Partnership for Europe Executive Committee.

Please read through the following frequently asked questions to ascertain if you are a good fit for this important role in the fight to reduce TB. We are currently seeking nominations for two positions for the Executive Committee.

Due the high burden of TB in East Europe & Central Asia and the complexities of HIV, TB & MDR-TB and drug use, which is a major factor, particularly in Russia & Ukraine, at least one of the two seats on the Executive Committee of the Stop TB Partnership for Europe has been reserved for a community member from EE&CAR. This person should be able to represent or have a knowledge of the region & its complexities.

Sincerely,

Mick Matthews

Chair
