22/03/07 - "TB Anywhere is TB Everywhere". Whilst TB exists anywhere in the world, there is a collective responsibility that touches everyone, everywhere, to combat this curable disease. The Theme: "TB Anywhere is TB Everywhere", reinforces this message of the need for collaboration, and also highlights the fact that TB can be spread easily due to the way in which it is transmitted. It's a fact, disease knows no borders and we humans are united in the air that we breathe whatever our differences.
Much good work has been done in the fight against TB. However, the growing incidence of MDR-TB and XDR-TB (Extensively Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis) threatens to undo our progress. We must stay focused and try to eliminate drug-resistancy wherever possible. It is a sad thing that a curable disease has been allowed to become immune to the very tools we have to fight it. Without better resources, more investment, and the right sort of political will, we run the risk of losing this battle and millions of lives will be lost. Continued complacency, especially among the governments of the developed world has to stop. TB everyones problem, a united effort is required to turn the tide. This is still a battle we can win!
On a less serious note, World TB Day 2007 marks the first birthday of the TB Survival Project. It's been a great year. To mark the occassion the acclaimed first-edition of The Tuberculosis Survival Handbook is now available, for all time, to be downloaded for FREE as PDF files only from this website.
