13/06/07 - Eli Lilly and Company have been recognized by the
Global Business Coalition for their contribution in the fight against
MDR-TB. At an awards gala in New York Sidney Taurel, Lilly's chairman and
chief executive officer said: "We are please to share this recognition with
the international alliance of organizations that have joined our battle to
stop the spread of MDR-TB. Through our collective efforts, we are committed
to providing the global resources necessary to improve the prevention and
treatment of patients afflicted by this deadly disease".
Lilly's pioneering MDR-TB Partnership began in 2003, when the company
dedicated $70 million in funding to support a multi pronged strategy to
increase the supply and availability of effective drugs for treating the
comlex and life threatening disease, training for front line health care
personnel, and efforts to focus global recources on prevention, diagnosis,
and treatment of MDR-TB.
In March 2007, the company recommited an additional $50 million to the Lilly
MDR-TB Partnership, which today consists of an international alliance of 14
public and private organizations, including the Tuberculosis Survival
Project (TBSP) who receive an unrestricted educational grant.
Paul Thorn, Project Director of TBSP said; "We are very proud to be part of
this alliance. Being a member of this unique partnership has enable us to
reach and help many people with TB and MDR-TB who had no where else to turn.
The Lilly MDR-TB Partnership is about so much more than just funding. They
have always been innovative in their approach and constantly want to push
the bounderies of the assistance that they give to help as many people with
MDR-TB as possible. The award from Global Business Coalition's Award for
Business Excellence is well deserved.
