Kenya Country profile on TB advocacy project
tbACTION Kenya will continue to engage in targeted advocacy activities in Kenya to address barriers that are impeding the flow of GFATM resources and consequently threatening GFATM support for TB and TB-HIV activities in Kenya. Initial activities already carried out in Kenya under the tbACTION Kenya project illustrate the kind of internal-external strategic alliance that can be taken forward in a very targeted way with ACTION project support.
ACTION partners have identified three targeted work streams in order to advocate effectively for release of GFATM funds in Kenya:
- Media outreach;
- Expansion of TB stakeholders; and
- Donor participation.
Primary Objectives are:
- Achieve the declaration of TB as a national emergency
- Ensure signing of GFATM Round 2, Phase 2 TB grant
- Strengthen TB representation, transparency, and accountability on the Country Coordinating Mechanism (CCM)of the GFATM.
- Strengthen and maintain a coalition of Kenyan TB stakeholders
Achievements so far
- Signing of GFATM Round 2, Phase 2 TB grant in the month of October 2006.
- In strengthening TB representation, transparency and accountability o the CCM, tbAction in collaboration with Kenya AIDS NGO consortium have been advocating for TB representation on the CCM through the current sensitization that is being done country wide in preparation for the elections for the civil society organizations to be held on the 30th of Nov. This is very historic since for the first time we are going to have TB representation on the CCM, more so a person living with TB.
- Civil societies in Kenya today are undergoing a revolution, with their implementation of TB activities at grass root level, being made possible from Global fund Round 5, TB Grant.
